CHICAGO, IL September 17, 2012—Andres Salgado has been walking around town for a month and a half with $1 million in his wallet. The Elk Grove Village resident won $1,000,000 in the July 25 Powerball drawing and only recently took the ticket out of his wallet to check it.
“For some reason, I didn’t check my ticket right away, then I checked and I couldn’t believe I won,” he said after checking his ticket at Golf Mobil Mart, located at 1 West Golf Road in Hoffman Estates. Salgado, who plays Powerball once a week, purchased his winning $2 Quick Pick ticket at the same store and matched all five numbers -03 - 14 - 35 - 38 - 46. His largest lottery win prior to this was $20.
Salgado is married with two sons, ages 16 and 21, and plans to use some of the winnings for their college education. He also plans to pay off his house and invest. “This money is a blessing,” he said.
Powerball jackpots start at $40million and grow quickly with each roll. The Powerball grand prize for this Wednesday is $149 million with a cash option of $94.2 million.
Powerball sales in Illinois stay in Illinois. Since Illinois introduced this multi-state lottery game, Powerball has contributed an estimated $120 million to the Illinois Common School Fund and Capital Projects Fund.
