Mahomet, IL—March 1, 2013—After recently winning $33,075 playing Lotto Extra Shot, a Mahomet couple will use part of the winnings to travel to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii next month and visit with their son, who will be returning to the US after serving a 7-month, Persian Gulf stint as a pilot on the USS John C Stennis aircraft carrier.
Michael and Marilyn Feigl of Mahomet will fly to Hawaii to greet their son, Matthew Peden, at Pearl Harbor. Peden, 27, is a University of Illinois aviation graduate who currently serves as a pilot in the US Navy, flying missions from the USS Stennis, which was deployed to the Persian Gulf last September. The trip will be extra-ordinary for Michael, who is scheduled to board the aircraft carrier in Pearl Harbor and sail with it to its base in San Diego.
The clerk double checked the ticket and told Debra she had hit the jackpot. “I started crying because I was so happy! The clerk congratulated me and gave me a big hug. I’ll definitely be going back to see her after I get my Lottery check,” she said.
“It will be great to see Matthew again,” said Marilyn. “Michael and I are both so proud of him. We will fly to Hawaii together in April, and then I’ll fly to San Diego to greet Michael and Matthew when the Stennis arrives there.” Michael’s trip aboard the carrier is part of the US Navy’s “Tiger Cruise” program that allows parents and other family members to live on board its vessels during routine trips to base. “I have to pack lightly,” said Michael. “Everything has to fit in one, small collapsible bag,”
Michael and Marilyn, traveled to Springfield this week to claim the prize for matching five Lotto numbers, plus the Extra Shot number, in the February 20 Lotto drawing. Because he opted for the additional $1 Extra Shot number-- and matched it—Michael’s match-5-number Lotto prize was multiplied by 25, growing from $1,323 to an impressive $33,075. “It was the best one-dollar investment of my life,” said Feigl, 63, of his $2 Quick Pick purchase. After required withholding, Michael’s check will be for $23,152.50.
“By paying an extra dollar for Extra Shot, Mike and Marilyn’s Lotto prize grew 25-fold—as did their options for putting the winnings to good use” said Lottery Superintendent Michael Jones. “We congratulate them on their win, and on their upcoming, storybook trip to Pearl Harbor to meet Matthew aboard the USS John C Stennis.”
Michael, a retired University of Illinois electrician, and Marilyn, also retired, have been married 26 years. Matthew Peden and his wife, Anna, have two children: Joshua, 2 and Sophia, 8 months. Sophia was little more than a newborn when Matthew deployed to the Persian Gulf last September. The family of four will be happily reunited at the Naval Air Station in Lemoore, California in mid- to late-April.
In addition to paying for the Hawaii trip, Michael and Marilyn will use the Lottery windfall to pay off bills from the joyful wedding last June of their 25-year-old daughter, Melissa, who married Joe Hunsinger, and currently is employed as a Champaign-area social worker.
The winning numbers from the Feb 20, 2013 Lotto drawing were: 02-13-22-24-25-43 (Extra Shot number was 13). Lotto with Extra Shot drawings are held Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Players get two sets of numbers for each $1 play. Those who opt for the Extra Shot option, pay an extra $1 for each set of Lotto numbers purchased.
